Text Box: “Two Halves Make A Whole”

Text Box: A very large deer hide, approximately 49” x 70”.  Extremely detailed.  Depicts two  Native Americans with spears on a black and white paint horse and a black and white appaloosa.  On each half, there’s both a dark and white buffalo.  This hide is so intricate that it should be hung low enough on a wall to view the detail, rather than up in the eaves.  An imposing piece with plenty of presence for your log, lodge or Western décor.  Click on the hide at left for a large close up.  You will not be disappointed with this one!  $2150.

Text Box: “The Origin”

Text Box: This is the painting that got me hooked!. I love the immediacy and earthiness of painting on hides.  One tends to “go with the flow” more than when you paint on canvas.  It’s as therapeutic as it is practical.  You can block out drafts at the same time you decorate!   Gene took this hide and then beaded it and added feathers.  Talk about presence!    It is well-loved.  Photo courtesy of my son, John Tautenhan.

Text Box: “Mirror Image”

Text Box: On a trophy sized 6 foot mule deer hide, I did my first full coverage painted hide.  My Arabian mare, Gai, was the subject, as she often is.  I don’t know if  it’s her beauty or my abilities but if she’s the subject, it doesn’t last long!  Painted circa 1997.  Sold.

Text Box: Hides

Text Box: I began painting hides in 1996, at the request of a Native American Art collector.  She had an antique bison hide that she wanted to display with her extensive art collection.   I loved the media so much that I went on to paint many more hides — buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, bear.  As with the drums, each skin whispers to me about the face it wants to present to the world.  How could it not?   It’s the shell of a living Spirit, gone on to nourish mankind.  Some “sold” hides are shown on this page as I have only a few finished pieces at any given time.  Should you desire a commission, please contact me as I have some quality hides in stock.  If you have a hair on trophy hide that you’d like to immortalize, I can do that too.  You can click on any photo to see a larger version.
